| Chemist, born in Wrocław, SW Poland (formerly Breslau, Prussia). He studied in Berlin, Heidelberg, and Zürich. Professor of chemistry at Karlsruhe and Berlin, he became known for his invention of the process for making ammonia from the nitrogen in the air. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1918. |
