| Writer and professor of Dutch literature, born in Utrecht, W Netherlands. He instantly made his mark on the literary map with his historical study Maerlants wereld (1995, Maerlant's World) about the Dutch mediaeval writer Jacob van Maerlant. Although the book was written as a study, it attracted a large reading public due to his popular literary style. For this book he was awarded the AKO literature prize. |
