| biography:
| Chemist, born in Riga, Latvia. He studied at Dorpat, and taught at Riga before becoming professor at Leipzig (1887–1906). He discovered the dilution law which bears his name, and invented a process for making nitric acid by the oxidation of ammonia. He also developed a new theory of colour. He was awarded the 1909 Nobel Prize for Chemistry for his work on catalytic reactions. |
