| Writer, born in Magdeburg, EC Germany. He studied law and philology, became a teacher in Leipzig, then a features editor in Hanover and Berlin, and editor of the Westermanns Monatshefte (1878–84). One of the most successful 19th-c novelists, he wrote lengthy, realistic books describing life during the 1848 Revolution and the social problems accompanying industrialization. His works include Hammer und Amboß (1869) and Sturmflut (1877). He also wrote poetry, plays, and literary essays. |
