biography: German general and resistance fighter, born in Leisnig, E Germany. He participated in the invasion of Poland as division commander and became chief of general staff from March 1940. He played a central role in the failed attempt on Hitler's life of 20 July 1944 (Zwanzigster Juli) and was shot later the same day.
