| Historian, born in Salzwedel, NC Germany. Professor at Stuttgart (1901), Freiburg im Breisgau (1906), and Berlin (1914–28), he was also editor of Historische Zeitschrift (1894–1935) and chairman of the Historische Reichskommission. A liberal, he opposed Nazism. He was co-founder and first rector of the Freie Universität Berlin. |
