| German politician and lawyer, born in Eichtersheim/Baden, SW Germany. A radical democrat, he aimed to change the Frankfurter Vorparlament into a permanent revolutionary committee, involving the abolition of the monarchy. In April 1848 he led the uprising in Baden, which was eventually crushed. He fled to Switzerland and then to the USA, where he fought on the side of the Union in the American War of Independence. |
