| Poet, born in Quedlinburg, C Germany. Inspired by Virgil and Milton, he began Der Messias (The Messiah) as a student at Jena (1745), completing it in 1773. He lived in Copenhagen (1751–71), then moved to Hamburg. Regarded in his own time as a great religious poet, he helped to inaugurate the golden age of German literature, especially by his lyrics and odes. |
