| Classical philologist and archaeologist, born in Haynrode, C Germany. Professor at Halle, he was instrumental in the foundation of Berlin University (1807) and became professor there (1810). In his Prologomena ad Homerum (1795) he initiated a critical-philological approach to the study of Homer's works. |
