| Chemist, born in Darmstadt, WC Germany. He studied at Giessen and Paris, where he met and was influenced by the work of Charles Gerhardt. He became professor at Ghent (1858) and at Bonn (1865), and made a major contribution to organic chemistry by developing structural theories, in particular the cyclic structure of benzene. |
