| Poet, born near Münster, W Germany. Commonly regarded as Germany's greatest woman writer, she led a retired life on her family estate. Her poetry is mainly on religious themes and on the Westphalian countryside. She also wrote a novella, Die Judenbuche (1842, The Jew's Beech Tree). Her works were published posthumously in 1851. |
