| German politician and philosopher, born in Darmstadt, WC Germany. Professor at Bonn (1880) and Munich (1882), he turned to politics and became prime minister of Bavaria (1912–17). He was then appointed chancellor and prime minister of Prussia (1917–18), an office he held only briefly because of the resistance from conservative circles in Prussia and the army. |
