| biography:
| German statesman, born in Klein-Glattbach, SW Germany. After consular service, he joined the German Embassy in Istanbul, and became ambassador to Italy (1921) and to Britain (1930). He was Hitler's foreign minister (1933–8), and the Reich protector of the Czech territories of Bohemia and Moravia (1939–43). At the Nuremberg trial he was sentenced to 15 years' imprisonment for war crimes, but released in 1954. |
