| biography:
| Soldier, born in Bodenwerder, C Germany. Proverbial as the narrator of ridiculously exaggerated exploits, he served in Russian campaigns against the Turks. A collection of stories attributed to him, and describing his surreal adventures, was first published in English as Baron Munchhausen's Narrative of his Marvellous Travels and Campaigns in Russia (1785) by Rudolf Erich Raspe (1737–94). In medicine, Münchhausen's syndrome has come to be attributed to individuals who wander round the country presenting themselves at different hospitals with different but spurious physical complaints. |
