| biography:
| Philosopher, mathematician, and scientist, born in Wrocław, SW Poland (formerly Breslau, Prussia). He studied at the universities of Wroclaw, Jena, and Leipzig and was a pupil of the philosopher Leibniz, on whose recommendation he was appointed professor of mathematics at Halle (1707). He was banished in 1723, following a theological dispute with the Pietists, became professor at Marburg (1723–40), was recalled (1740) by Frederick II to Halle, and became chancellor of the university (1743). He is best known for popularizing the philosophy of Leibniz, and he is usually regarded as the German spokesman of the Enlightenment in the 18th-c. |
