| Pathologist, born in Königgrätz, Austria. Professor of pathological anatomy at Vienna (1834–75), he personally performed 30 000 autopsies, was one of the founders of modern pathological anatomy, and established the New Vienna School as an internationally known medical centre. He wrote the great Handbuch der pathologischen Anatomie (1842–6, Treatise of Pathological Anatomy). |
