| biography:
| Founder of the first news agency, born in Kassel, C Germany. Of Jewish parentage, he became a Christian and adopted his new name in 1844. He published political pamphlets, moved to Paris during the revolution (1848), and sent news items back to German newspapers via a pigeon carrier service (1850). He developed the idea of a telegraphic news service, and in 1851 moved his headquarters to London, becoming a naturalized British subject. His news service extended worldwide with the development of undersea cables. He was created a baron in 1871. |
