| Prussian statesman, born in Ansbach, SC Germany. As minister of culture (1817–38), he sought to promote learning and education. His church policies proved contentious, such as the disputes about Protestant union which arose in 1817 and the ‘Kölner Kirchenstreit’ over mixed marriages in 1837. |
