| Mathematician and geophysicist, born in Skien, S Norway. He studied at Christiania (Oslo), and became professor there in 1903. Inspired by the experiments of Birkeland, he carried out research on auroral phenomena, making important contributions to the understanding of their formation. His work was also significant in the study of the behaviour of cosmic rays near the Earth. |
