| biography:
| Liberal politician, born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He was in legal practice in Rotterdam (1958–82) and again after 1990 as member of the Nauta Dutilh partnership. In 1975–81 he led the Volkspartij voor Vrijheid en Democratie (VVD), representing them in parliament (1989–91), and in the Upper House (1981–2, 1994–7). He was minister of justice in 1982–9, and in 1997 became chairman of the Upper House. |
