| Explorer and soldier, born in Salem, Massachusetts, USA. He studied engineering and led or participated in five transcontinental surveys for transportation routes (1853–60). He was a Union brigadier-general of volunteers (1861–2) and he wrote many patriotic poems during the Civil War. |
