| Serial murderer and builder, born in Much Marcle, Herefordshire, WC England, UK. He and his wife, Rosemary (1953– ), born in Devon, SW England, UK, were accused in 1994 of killing 10 women, among them the former wife and a daughter of Frederick West, following the discovery of numerous bodies buried in their garden and house at 25 Cromwell Street, Gloucester, England. The victims, many of whom had been homeless young women, had been sexually abused, tortured, and then dismembered. In 1995 Frederick was found hanged in his Birmingham prison cell while awaiting trial. Rosemary West was convicted of 10 murders and sentenced to life imprisonment, and in 1996 the Court of Appeal refused her permission to appeal against her conviction. Other bodies of victims presumed to have been murdered by the Wests were never found. The house at Cromwell Street was demolished, and in 1997 became the site of a landscaped walkway. |
