| biography:
| British field marshal, born in Cawnpore, N India. He trained at Sandhurst Military Academy, and took an active part in the Indian Mutiny, winning the VC in 1858. He became commander-in-chief in India (1885–93), and served as supreme commander in South Africa during the Boer War, relieving Kimberley (1900). He was created earl in 1901, and died while visiting troops in the field in France. |
