| Judge, born in Louisa, Kentucky, USA. He served in the US House of Representatives (Democrat, Kentucky, 1923–9, 1931–8) and was appointed to the US Court of Appeals (1938). He directed the Office of Economic Stabilization (1943–5) and was secretary of the treasury (1945–6) before President Truman named him chief justice of the US Supreme Court (1946–53). |
