| Lawn tennis and table tennis player, born in Stockport, Greater Manchester, NW England, UK. He won the world table tennis title (1929) and the men's lawn tennis singles title at Wimbledon (1934–6), the last British male champion. He also won the singles title at the French, Australian, and US championships, and was the first man to win all four major titles. He later became a US citizen, and served with the US armed forces. A notable writer, after retiring he was also proprietor of a sports goods firm. |
