| Zambian politician and president (1991–2002), born in Wusakile, N Zambia. A former socialist and chairman of the Zambian Trade Unions, he is leader of the Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) which campaigned against former president Kenneth Kaunda's one-party rule. He won re-election to a second five-year term in 1996, despite a lawsuit questioning his birthplace and hence his eligibility for the post. |
