| King of Prussia (1701–13), born in Königsberg, Prussia (now Kaliningrad, Russia). He succeeded to the electorate of Brandenburg in 1688 (as Frederick III) and was made the first King of Prussia for his loyalty to Emperor Leopold against the French. He maintained a large court, established a standing army, and was a great patron of the arts and learning. |
