| Photographer and inventor, born in Litchfield, Connecticut, USA. Apprenticed to a printer as a boy, he was head of the Cornell University photographic library at 18. He experimented with the possibilities of photography as a means of illustration, and invented (1878) and improved (1885) the half-tone process. He later pioneered natural colours for motion pictures (1914). |
