| biography:
| Painter, born in Hartford, Connecticut, USA. Considered a member of the Hudson River School, he studied with Thomas Cole, and travelled in Europe and South America. By 1870 he began construction of his exotic mansion, Olana, on the Hudson R. His panoramic scenes reveal his dramatic use of lighting and naturalistic details, as seen in his ‘Niagara’ (1857) and ‘The Heart of the Andes’ (1859). |
