| Clergyman, born in London, UK. He studied at Cambridge, was a lecturer in Semitic languages at Manchester (1931–4), professor of the New Testament at Wycliffe College, Toronto (1937–44), Principal of London College of Divinity (1944–56), Bishop of Bradford (1956–61), Archbishop of York (1961–74), and finally Archbishop of Canterbury (1974–80), when he was made a life peer. He was the author of several theological works, including Sure Foundation (1981) and A New Way for Preaching (1996). |
