| biography:
| Explorer and big-game hunter, born in London, UK. He first visited South Africa in 1871, travelled from Cape Town to Matabeleland (Zimbabwe), and later spent almost 20 years exploring and hunting in the country between the Transvaal of South Africa and the Congo basin. In 1890 he was in the service of the British South African Company, and helped bring the district of Manicaland under British control. His books include Sunshine and Storm in Rhodesia (1896), an account of the Matabele War. The Selous National Park in Tanzania is named after him. |
