| Conductor, born in Jülich, Germany. Trained in Germany, he went to the USA and became a protégé of Theodore Thomas. He joined the Chicago Symphony as a viola player (1895), succeeded Thomas as conductor (1905), and served until his death, making the orchestra a major cultural force for the whole Midwest through its educational programmes and varied repertoire. |
