| biography:
| Painter, born in Montpellier, S France, of a wealthy family of wine producers. After failing as a medical student, he studied art with Renoir at Gleyre's salon in Paris (1862) and was a close friend of Monet, Sisley, and Manet. A figure painter rather than a landscapist, his best work was Family reunion (1867–8, Musée d'Orsay, Paris). He was a generous supporter of Monet and Renoir, but his own career was cut short when he was killed in action during the Franco-Prussian War in 1870. Other works include Portrait of Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1867, Musée d'Orsay, Paris) and View of the Village (1868, Musée Fabre, Montpellier). |
