| Cricketer and broadcaster, born in Stainton, South Yorkshire, N England, UK. Educated at Maltby Secondary School, he became an apprentice bricklayer before developing into the first genuinely fast bowler in post-war English cricket. A Yorkshire player for 19 years (1949–68), he played in 67 Tests for England between 1952 and 1965, and took a record number of 307 wickets, three times taking 10 wickets in a match. In his first-class career he took 2304 wickets, and made three centuries. A bluff and forthright Yorkshireman, he has worked as a cricket writer and commentator since he retired. |
