| biography:
| Film director, born in Vienna, Austria. He studied law at the University of Vienna (1925–7), then cinematography in Paris (1927–8). He emigrated to the USA in 1929, and began making documentary films in Hollywood, notably That Mothers Might Live (1938, Oscar), and Benjy (1951, Oscar). A recurrent theme in his films concerns the conflict of conscience and moral dilemmas of reluctant heroes, as explored in the Oscar-nominated High Noon (1952), and two Oscar winners, From Here to Eternity (1953), and A Man For All Seasons (1966). Other notable films included The Sundowners (1960) and The Day of the Jackal (1973). |
