| German politician and economist, born in Leipzig, EC Germany. He joined the Kommunistiche Partei Deutschlands (KPD) in 1920 and went to Russia in 1933, where he headed the German department of Moscow Radio in World War 2. A member of the Politbüro (1950–8), he became the chief ideologist of the Sozialistiche Einheitspartei (SED), but was excluded from all official German Democratic Republic committees as a result of his opposition to Walter Ulbricht. |
