| US marathon runner and organizer, born in Romania. He emigrated to the USA in 1951, joined the New York Road Runners Club in 1968, and became club president in 1972. By obtaining sponsorship, attracting big name runners, and international television, he turned the New York Marathon into a major event and the prototype for other city marathons. |
