| Orthopaedic surgeon, born in Alna, Maine, USA. He began work in New York (1906) and pioneered the techniques of bone grafting. By 1911 he had perfected techniques for fusing tubercular vertebrae without using metal, and in 1912 invented machine tools for his operations. His techniques found widespread use during World War 1, and later he turned his attention to victims of industrial accidents in New York and New Jersey. |
