| biography:
| First Archbishop of Granada, born in Talavera de la Reina, Toledo, C Spain. He studied in Salamanca, and was appointed on 2 January 1492, the date of the completed Reconquest. Of the Hieronymite Order, he was confessor to Queen Isabel, but he claimed that his sermons were intended for ‘la más simple viejecita’ and employed simple images to convey his message. His XXIV capítulos sobre el tratado del vestir, calzar, comer y beber (1480?) show clearly, though incidentally, the manners of the time. His attempt to have the Bible translated into Arabic as a means of propagating the faith among the Muslims in his see was frustrated by Cardinal Ximénez de Cisneros. His ascetic writings prefigured those of Santa Teresa de Ávila, concentrating on the necessity of clear exposition for a popular audience, particularly in his influential Breve e muy provechosa doctrina de lo que deue saber todo christiano (1496). |
