| Composer, born in Split, S Croatia. Originally intended for a medical career, after his father's death he moved to Vienna and took up music. He conducted for the Josephstadt and Leopoldstadt theatres, and began to compose. His works include operettas, songs and Masses, and his Light Cavalry and Poet and Peasant overtures are still firm favourites. |
