| Writer, born in Rochlitz (now Rokytnice, Czech Republic). During his wartime captivity in Russia he converted to communism, and from 1949 he was a cultural official in East Berlin. A direct and passionate lyricist, he liked to update motives from folklore and legend, and recurrent themes in his prose were the Nazi period and World War 2. His various works include the polemical Die Wiedergeburt unserer nationalen Kultur (1952) and Die Literatur der Kesselrings (1954); the tales Kameraden (1955), Stürzende Schatten (1959), Vom Moritz, der kein Schmutzkind mehr sein wollte (1959) and Fronten (1960); and the poetry Die Nelke Nikos (1953) and Die Richtung der Märchen (1962). |
