| biography:
| Novelist and translator, born in Nijmegen, E Netherlands. He studied English language and literature and became a lecturer of 19th-c century Anglo-Saxon literature. His first work Bouwval (Ruin) appeared in 1977. In his collection of essays De veren van de zwaan (1987, The Feathers of the Swan) he exemplified his view on literature stating that art is an imitation of mystic reality and that it is the writer's task to ‘feign in a sincere way’ - a view which was voiced in Revisor and is therefore sometimes referred to as Revisor prose. His ideas are most strikingly reflected in his most popular work, Mystiek lichaam (1986, Mystic Body), in the grotesqueness of the characters and his typical use of imagery. In addition, he translated the work of Henry James, Lawrence Sterne, and Emily Brontë. |
