| Novelist, born in Hämeenkyrö, SW Finland. The foremost Finnish writer of his time, he was the son of a peasant farmer. His major works were Hurskas kurjuus (1919, Meek Heritage), a novel about the Finnish civil war, and Nuorena nukkunut (1931, Fallen Asleep When Young) about the collapse of traditional values in Finland. He was awarded the 1939 Nobel Prize for Literature. |
