| biography:
| Dutch diplomat and lawyer, born in The Hague, W Netherlands. After a diplomatic career he served as minister of foreign affairs (1927–33), vice-president of the Council of State (1933–56), and minister of state (from 1936). He represented the Christelijk Historische Unie (CHU) in parliament. During World War 2 he was one of the chief advisers to the Crown in exile in England (1940–5). He also pursued a scholarly interest in genealogy, numismatics, and military history. |
