| biography:
| Writer and politician, born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He co-founded the magazine De nieuwe gids and contributed to it for many years. A Marxist, he was politically active, and was a co-founder of the Sociaal-Democratische Arbeiders Partij (1894). He became editor of the Marxist magazine De Nieuwe Tijd and later of Het Weekblad, a critical periodical within the party. In 1932 he joined the Onafhankelijke Socialistische Partij.
