| Geologist, born in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. He was professor of physics at Howard University and at Cincinnati (1874–83), chief chemist to the US Geological Survey (1883–1925), and did much work on the recalculation of atomic weights. He was the first to calculate the chemical composition of the Earth's crust. |
