| Writer, born in Eluisenstein, near Ogre, C Latvia. He studied German literature, history, and philosophy, then worked as a journalist for the Berliner Tagesblatt, as a playwright and theatre director in Stuttgart, and as a theatre critic in Hanover before starting to write full-time in 1923. He coined the phrase innere Emigration (‘inner emigration’), referring to those writers who stayed in Germany during the Third Reich without supporting the regime. He is the author of well-crafted, imaginative novels which focus on human problems and historical themes. |
