| biography:
| Physical chemist, born in Delaware, Ohio, USA. He studied at the University of Chicago (1952), taught at Princeton and the University of Kansas, then joined the University of California, Irvine (1964). In 1974, with Mario Molina, he predicted the destruction of ozone in the Earth's atmosphere as a by-product of using chlorofluorocarbons as a refrigerant and aerosol propellant - a prediction confirmed in 1985 when the British Antarctic Survey discovered the hole in the ozone layer over the South Pole. They shared the 1995 Nobel Prize for Chemistry with Paul Crutzen. |
