| biography:
| Evangelist, founder of the ‘Group’ and ‘Moral Rearmament’ movements, born in Pennsburg, Pennsylvania, USA. He was a Lutheran minister in charge of a hospice for under-privileged boys in Philadelphia (1902–7), travelled extensively in the East, and in 1921, believing that there was an imminent danger of the collapse of civilization, founded at Oxford the ‘Group Movement’. It was labelled the ‘Oxford Group’ until 1938, when it rallied under the slogan ‘Moral Re-armament’. After World War 2 the movement emerged in a more political guise as an alternative to capitalism and communism. |
