| biography:
| Portrait photographer, born near Whitby, North Yorkshire, N England, UK. His studies of the vanishing world of English farmhands and fisher-folk brought him numerous awards from international exhibitions between 1881 and 1905. From the late 1890s he made extensive use of the new lightweight Kodak cameras to obtain intimate natural snapshots rather than formal poses. Reviving interest in Victoriana led to the publication of a fully illustrated account of his work in 1974. |
